Sharp Suits, the revised edition
Hurrah! The revised edition of Sharp Suits, my coffee-table book on the history of men’s tailoring, has just been published, about 30 months after the first edition appeared. Full details on it can be found on the website of Anova Books; the book has been published by its Pavilion imprint (ISBN 9781909108257)
The new version is a tiny bit smaller, it has lost its paper cover and there is a fine new foreword courtesy of Timothy Everest MBE. I have taken two great images from inside the first edition and moved them on to the new covers. Here Steve McQueen is wearing a fabulous Dougie Hayward suit in The Thomas Crown Affair (1968).
On the back cover, Edward, Prince of Wales, shows how to wear patterns (five in this case) with confidence in the 1920s.
To replace that image of Edward inside, I selected this rather nice one on him in a DB. I have changed a number of the images inside the book.
There are eight more pages in the new edition, so I have brought in some excellent images of some well-dressed men that I didn’t have room for first time round, such as the late Gianni Agnelli and his grandson Lapo Elkann.
In the chapter on the suit in the movies I have added Michael Caine in Get Carter (1971), also wearing Dougie Hayward, and Steve Buscemi as the immaculately-dressed Nucky Thompson in Boardwalk Empire (2010 onwards).
I was pleased to include in SS2 the dapper Charlie Allen, who was making suits for me 20 years ago and is still going strong in his Islington shop. I couldn’t resist making an Alfred Hitchcock-like appearance in my own book – here I am in a tweed suit by Roger Dack in 1990. I hope you enjoy the revised edition, which feels rather like an entirely new book. The UK cover price is a modest £14.99.
