Hawick Cashmere, in Hawick

Some 90 people work on the manufacturing side of Hawick Cashmere, making it one of the largest knitwear firms in the cashmere capital of the Borders. Technical innovation has played a huge part in the company’s success. For example, it has been using Shima Seiki seamless knitting machines for more than 10 years. Chief executive Jim Thomson told me that the latest model, which costs £140,000, had arrived in July and after testing had finished, it would soon join the production line. It’s this sort of constant investment that will keep the best of Scotland’s producers very viable for a worldwide market.
