Johnstons’ sense of heritage

Any trip to the Borders should include a visit to the fascinating Cashmere Heritage Centre in Hawick that has been built by cashmere specialist Johnstons of Elgin alongside its own busy knitting factory. Johnstons, founded in 1797, is still family-owned and is one of only a very few vertical textile companies that still spins, weaves, knits and finishes its cloth and knitwear in the UK. Besides the superb clothes and accessories, the Hawick centre features many interesting artifacts from the industry of days gone by, including the steam-powered glove press I am leaning on. A visit is highly recommended.
